PART 1

The examiner asks you about yourself, your home, work or studies and other familiar topics.

• Did you have a favourite book when you were a child? [Why/Why not?]

Well, yes as a  matter of fact when I was a child I had so many books and reading was a popular leisure activity. I had some works of the famous French writer, Jules Verne, who I think was very popular among kids of my age at that time.

.

• How much reading do you do for your work/studies? [Why/Why not?]

I think compare to many other occupations, my job as a teacher involves a lot of reading and learning. It is far from repeating the same thing and in order to keep yourself in a shape and up to date on one and hand and to produce valuable and reliable content for the audience on the other, you nee to read constantly. So I read for many hours every week and I truly enjoy it.

.

• What kinds of books do you read for pleasure? [Why/Why not?]

I am really into novels, especially classics from 19th and early 20th century. I always read in English since I don’t believe in translations. I think the whole point is lost when they change it from one language to another. True that some works from Spanish speaking countries or Russia is always a translation but still I prefer the English version. I think if a novel is interesting enough and take you with the story, it can be the most pleasant experience in the world.

.

• Do you prefer to read a newspaper or a magazine online, or to buy a copy? [Why?]

To be honest I hardly ever read newspapers or magazines but if I have the chance to get my hands on something original, I sure would prefer it to be a hard copy. The reason is I really like it when I have what I read in my hand and I can keep it in my book shelf to take a look at it later. I also can circle the sentences I like or the words I don’t know. These manipulations make it much more interesting to me and help me remember more of it later on.

PART 2

Describe a big city you would like to visit.
You should say:
• which big city you would like to visit
• how you would travel there
• what you would do there
• and explain why you would like to visit this big city.

I have chosen to talk about a large city that I am planning to visit sometime in the future. As I really like India and I have been there before for a few months, if I have the chance, I would like to take another trip there to a large city in the south of that country which is called Bangalore. This city is a megacity with lot of facilities and places for sightseeing. I prefer to have a direct flight from Tehran to this city since it has a large international airport and Indian airlines are both comfortable and reliable with schedule.

What I like most about this city is the places to see and the shopping. It has some of the greatest bookshops of the whole nation and since Indians are avid readers, chances are you can find almost anything you like there. I also very much like to try several Indian and Chinese restaurants since the vegetarian cuisines they serve are absolutely fantastic and also really affordable. There are also palaces, temples and museums to visit and enjoy the diversity of religion and culture in that country.

I don’t personally choose a large city to visit since I am a big fan of small towns and countryside, but if I want to choose a large city, it would be this place. I remember in 2008, I first visited India and my connecting flight was from Mumbai to Bangalore, where I took another 3 hours ride to a little town named Mysore. I have been in Bangalore 2 or 3 times before and I had my first IELTS exam there. It would be nice to get a taste of this city if there is an opportunity for it.

PART 3

Discussion topics:

• What are the most interesting things to do while visiting cities on holiday?

Well this question can have different answers depending on people who answer it but I personally find the culture and art the most exciting things about a new place. You know how people’s traditions and ideas differ from a place to another. I try to visit places where the manifestation of such aspect of people’s lives are the most obvious one. Places like museums, or places where religious rituals are held, or houses of famous writers or things like this. I know for most people beaches and restaurants or probably beaches or fancy hotels are on top of the list but to me and some other people, thing I just mentioned mean much more.

.

• Why can it be expensive to visit cities on holiday?

I believe there is an extra charge during high seasons because many people’s lives depend on that income and the time to visit a particular place is limited to a certain time of the year and it is not distributed evenly, so it makes sense if people charge you more if there is a holiday. On the other hand, based on basic economics, when the demand for something increases, the price rises in response and I think there is almost no exception for that. Therefore, we need to be realistic and expect to pay more for the same service at certain times of the year.

.

• Do you think it is better to visit cities alone or in a group with friends?

I personally prefer to travel alone because there will be a chance to think more and consider something from different angles but for most people it would be a suicide! Very few people enjoy being alone visiting a new place or a city for that matter. The fun would be to spend quality time with friends and loved ones. The fact of being together and sharing the moment is the most important part of such journeys.

.

• Why have cities increased in size in recent years?

Well I believe human population in general is increasing all around the world, so it is obvious that we expect the population increase almost everywhere but in fact this increase is at its highest rate in large cities and it is because of the opportunities and the possibilities that they provide. Thousands of new jobs every year, handsome salaries and perks that are nowhere to be found in a small town or a village. It seems the bigger a city grows, more it has to offer, so the cycle feeds itself, regardless of all negative points we keep hearing about.

.

• What are the challenges created by ever-growing cities?

The population and size of megacities in many parts of the world especially in developing parts have already reached an alarming level, meaning the consumption of resources, the waste stream produced and the security to maintain are at the state of emergency according to some experts and this trend cannot go on like that for long and some sort of crash is to be expected. We have already witness a soaring price of basic foods and housing which means the future growth and prosperity for majority of large cities and their residents is far from sustainable and certain.

.

• In what ways do you think cities of the future will be different to cities today?

Undoubtedly, energy consumption cannot go on like it has long been, since there will be limitation in extraction of resources and also new challenges like global warming, so future cities will be designed to address these challenges and I believe there will be innovations in transportation and the whole way of delivering services and products to consumers. Probably people will be even more cramped into smaller apartments and have to travel even longer distance to get to their workplace. But a future in a distant future always looks positive and promising to me, since younger generations always reject the backward ideas and wrong assumptions of their fathers and I believe there is always hope and a reason for optimism in the future.
