Pie chart illustrates the main reasons of global degradation of land, which leads to poor harvest. Excessive grazing of live stock is the most important reason worldwide, affecting 35% of the whole lands, followed by disappearance of forests and over cultivation, 30% and 28% respectively. Only 7 percent of degradation was reported to be related to other reasons.
The table reveals that different parts of the world were affected differently, with Europe having a noticeable 23 percent of affected land, while Oceania and north American had 13 and only 5 percent respectively. Deforestation was a major issue in Europe with just under 10 percent of degradation, while it influenced less than 2 percent of lands in Oceania and a negligible percentage in north America.
Over-cultivation, however, impacted mostly Europe with less than 8 percent and 3.3 percent of north America, while Oceania remained unaffected. Over 11 percent of lands in Oceania suffered from over grazing, while it was only responsible for 5.5 percent of degradation in Europe and only 1.5 percent in North America.
Overall, it appears that three main causes of land degradation had almost the same global influence, but in each region one reason can be considered to be a dominant factor.
