Sociologists in the last century witnessed a radical change in the family structure and the way it functions. It seems that many married couples are not eager to have their children at the same age that their parents used to have. This essay discusses the reasons behind this phenomenon and its possible social consequences.

Economic factors without doubt play a crucial role in the way different social institution including family form and function. During the last few decades of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21th century, the global economy showed signs of slowdown which translated to more more work and less payment for younger members of the society. As a result, fewer young people, nowadays, are willing to start a family in their early twenties, let alone having children during this time. Apparently, they postpone it to a later time with more money in bank and a more secure career to be able to support their families and a to make a better life possible for their offspring.

The most important consequence of having children later in life is the age difference between parents and their young. Having children in their thirties, parents have to deal with intimidating task of dealing with their teens while facing their middle-age crises themselves. Considering the rapid pace of technological development, figuring out what king of electronic gadgets teens use and what they can conceal would be an impossible task. Moreover, there is a chance that next generation also decide to have their children even later and as a result many parents would only see their grandchildren while being in their seventies or eighties and simply can not enjoy spending time with them the traditional way.

All in all, it is hard to deny that economic factors have altered many important decisions in peoples’ lives including the age in which they decide to have children and it brings about some challenges for the future societies. (325 words)
