Sample Essay (Band 9)

One of the consequences of improved medical care is that people are living longer and life expectancy is increasing.

Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

One of the most significant outcomes of advancements in medical care is the steady increase in life expectancy. While this trend certainly presents several challenges, I believe the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

On the positive side, longer life expectancy allows individuals to enjoy more productive and fulfilling years. With improvements in healthcare, people can remain physically active and mentally alert well into their later years. This extended vitality enables many elderly individuals to contribute meaningfully to society, whether through volunteering, mentoring younger generations, or remaining in part-time employment. Furthermore, longer life spans can strengthen family units, as grandparents play a more sustained role in raising and supporting grandchildren.

From an economic perspective, although an aging population may increase pressure on pension systems and healthcare services, it also creates opportunities. The “silver economy” — goods and services tailored to older adults — is a growing sector. If managed properly, it can contribute significantly to economic growth. Additionally, older individuals often hold a wealth of experience and expertise that can benefit the workforce and society at large.

On the other hand, some drawbacks must be acknowledged. Increased longevity can strain public resources, particularly in countries with limited budgets. Healthcare systems may become overburdened by the rising demand for elderly care, leading to longer waiting times and potential declines in service quality. Socially, there may also be issues related to intergenerational equity, as younger taxpayers may feel the burden of supporting an increasingly retired population.

Nevertheless, these issues can be addressed through strategic planning and policy reforms. By encouraging healthier lifestyles, promoting later retirement ages, and investing in elderly-friendly infrastructure, governments can mitigate many of the negative consequences associated with an aging population.

In conclusion, while increased life expectancy does present certain challenges, the benefits—including prolonged personal fulfillment, social contributions, and economic potential—clearly outweigh the disadvantages. With thoughtful policy and societal adaptation, this development can be a positive force for all.
