Science has always been a wonderful tool during the human story but its ultimate functions is still a topic for debate. While is it argued that its final goal ought to be the betterment of human life since it is simply a tool to be utilized, I put forward the view that prioritizing human life is wrong as it might lead to abuse.
Science can simply be a useful tool for human being to be better the quality of their life and it has been an inseparable part of our success story since the dawn of civilization. It still can be regarded as such and if it is applied properly and its undesirable outcomes are kept in check, science can still help us prosper and flourish. For instance, new threats to our survival such as global pollution or looming threat of nuclear catastrophes can only be addressed using the very science that has given birth to them in the first place. I firmly believe if we attempt to engineer the science out of this equation, we will always end up in an inferior and perhaps more dangerous situation.
However we should not lose the sight of the contribution it has had to our current problems. Many including me believe the pattern of two steps forward and one step back is an inherent and unchangeable nature of science and therefore, it can be easily used to one’s advantage and abuse. So, in this regard, we better consider a rather more philosophical approach to our modern challenges than relying solely on science and technology. As an example, instead of placing too much faith on state-of-the-art technology as a panacea, we might just have to come up with an alternative worldview in which we consume less and feel satisfied with a simpler life.
In conclusion, while I admit that science is a useful tool that can always surprise us when we expect little in tackling our problem and in giving us more comfort and hence its usage should be somehow prioritized in that regard, there are compelling arguments that it cannot be trusted with blind faith since the solutions might be found elsewhere.
