ELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer (Band 9)
There is an ongoing debate about whether children should be allowed to make mistakes freely or whether adults should intervene to prevent them. Both perspectives have valid arguments, and it is essential to examine each one before drawing a conclusion.
On the one hand, some people argue that making mistakes is an essential part of a child’s development. By allowing children to experience failure, they can develop resilience, learn from their errors, and ultimately grow stronger. Moreover, when children make mistakes, they can learn valuable lessons that are difficult to teach through words alone. For instance, a child who forgets to complete their homework might feel the consequences of their actions and be more mindful in the future. This sense of responsibility can be beneficial in shaping their character and preparing them for the challenges they will face in adulthood.
On the other hand, some believe that adults should prevent children from making mistakes to shield them from failure. They argue that overprotection is necessary to ensure children’s well-being and mental health. In a world where competition is fierce, many adults think that mistakes can harm a child’s confidence, leading to feelings of inadequacy. For example, if a child constantly faces failure, they might lose motivation and develop a fear of trying new things. In this case, adults play a crucial role in guiding children, preventing them from encountering situations that might result in harmful mistakes.
In my opinion, while it is important for children to learn from their mistakes, the role of adults should not be overlooked. A balance is needed. Parents and educators can step in when necessary, offering guidance without completely preventing children from experiencing failure. By doing so, they can help children navigate their mistakes in a healthy way, while also allowing them to learn the important lessons that come from their own actions.
In conclusion, both perspectives have merit, but I believe that a combination of allowing children to make mistakes and providing appropriate guidance is the most effective approach. This way, children can grow into responsible and capable individuals who are not afraid to learn from their errors.
