Band 9 Sample Essay:

It is neither useful nor possible that a country provides university places for most younger people.

To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The notion that governments should provide universal access to university education for the majority of young people is often debated. While it may seem idealistic, I strongly agree with the statement that it is neither practical nor beneficial for a country to allocate university places to most of its youth. This essay will explore both the logistical and economic limitations, as well as the potential social consequences of such a policy.

First, from a logistical standpoint, offering university education to the majority of young people is unsustainable. Higher education institutions typically require significant funding, infrastructure, and qualified staff to maintain quality. Expanding enrollment excessively would either reduce academic standards or place a severe burden on public finances. Many nations, particularly those in the developing world, face budgetary constraints that make such widespread access an unrealistic goal.

Moreover, not every young person aspires to pursue an academic path, nor should they be expected to. Societies depend on a diverse range of professions, many of which do not require a university degree. Encouraging vocational training and apprenticeships can be far more effective for students whose skills align better with hands-on work. Forcing a university model on everyone may lead to mismatches between education and employment, resulting in high graduate unemployment rates and underutilization of talent.

Additionally, the overemphasis on university education can lead to the devaluation of degrees. When higher education becomes the norm rather than the exception, its impact in the job market diminishes, creating unrealistic expectations among graduates. This, in turn, can breed dissatisfaction and widen the gap between academic qualifications and actual labor market needs.

In conclusion, while expanding access to education is a noble goal, providing university places for most young people is neither feasible nor advantageous. A more balanced approach that includes robust vocational pathways and a realistic assessment of national capabilities will serve both individuals and society better in the long run.
