Sample IELTS Writing Task 2 Answer (Band 9)

Some people believe that climate affects the person’s way of life while others believe that climate has greater impact on the economy of a region.

Discuss both view and give your opinion?

Climate plays a significant role in shaping both the way of life of individuals and the economic development of a region. While some argue that climate primarily influences a person’s lifestyle, others believe it has a more substantial effect on the economy. This essay will explore both perspectives before concluding with my own opinion.

On the one hand, climate can dramatically affect a person’s way of life. In regions with extreme weather conditions, such as scorching heat or freezing cold, people’s daily routines, clothing choices, and even diets can be altered to accommodate the local environment. For example, in countries with tropical climates, people tend to wear light, breathable clothing and eat foods that help cool the body. Similarly, in colder climates, the population often relies on heavier clothing and hot meals to combat the chill. Moreover, outdoor activities, such as farming or sports, can be limited by harsh climatic conditions, leading individuals to adjust their daily habits accordingly.

On the other hand, climate is also a crucial factor in the economic prosperity of a region. For instance, agricultural production is directly impacted by climate conditions. Areas with favorable weather can cultivate a variety of crops, whereas regions with harsh climates may struggle to grow food, limiting their economic output. In addition, tourism is another sector significantly influenced by climate. Regions with pleasant, temperate climates tend to attract tourists year-round, contributing to a robust economy, while areas prone to extreme weather patterns often see fluctuations in visitor numbers, affecting their tourism revenue.

In my opinion, while climate undoubtedly affects both the way of life and the economy of a region, the economic impact is more far-reaching. A stable, favorable climate can lead to increased productivity, tourism, and trade, ultimately benefiting a region’s overall economic development. In contrast, the way of life, although certainly influenced by climate, is more adaptable and can be altered through technological advancements and societal changes.

To conclude, while climate affects both lifestyle and economy, its influence on economic activities appears to have a more profound and lasting effect. Therefore, economic growth and development seem to be more directly linked to climate than individual ways of life.
