Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some believe that younger family members should be legally responsible for supporting older family members when they become physically, mentally and financially unable to look after themselves.

Do you agree or disagree?

The question of whether younger family members should be legally obligated to support their older relatives is a contentious issue that raises both moral and practical concerns. While some argue that such laws would strengthen family bonds and ensure the welfare of the elderly, I believe that imposing legal responsibilities could lead to unintended consequences and should be approached with caution.

On the one hand, proponents of this idea argue that it is a fundamental duty of younger generations to care for their elders. They contend that families have a moral obligation to provide financial, emotional, and physical support to older members who can no longer fend for themselves. This perspective is often rooted in cultural traditions where filial piety is highly valued. For instance, in many Asian societies, it is considered a cardinal virtue for children to look after their aging parents. By enforcing such responsibilities through legislation, governments could potentially reduce the burden on public welfare systems and foster stronger intergenerational relationships.

However, I disagree with the notion of making this support a legal requirement. Firstly, such laws could place an unreasonable burden on younger family members, particularly those who are already struggling financially or emotionally. For example, a young adult with limited income might find it prohibitively difficult to support both their own family and their aging parents. Secondly, enforcing these obligations could lead to resentment and strained family relationships, as support should ideally come from a place of love and duty rather than legal coercion. Instead, governments should focus on creating robust social safety nets, such as affordable healthcare and pension systems, to ensure the elderly are cared for without overburdening younger generations.

In conclusion, while the idea of legally mandating younger family members to support their elders is well-intentioned, it is not a practical or fair solution. A more balanced approach would involve promoting cultural values of care and responsibility while ensuring that the state provides adequate support for the elderly.
