Sample Essay (Band 9)

Very large international companies are becoming extremely powerful. Some people believe that it is a negative development.

In your opinion, is it a negative or positive?

The growing power of very large international companies has sparked a contentious debate about whether this trend is beneficial or harmful. While some argue that these corporations drive economic growth and innovation, others believe their dominance has detrimental effects on society. In my opinion, the rise of such companies is a double-edged sword, with both positive and negative consequences.

On the one hand, the influence of large international companies can be beneficial for global economic development. These corporations often invest heavily in research and development, leading to technological advancements that improve quality of life. For example, companies like Apple and Google have revolutionized communication and access to information, creating unprecedented opportunities for individuals and businesses. Additionally, multinational corporations generate employment on a massive scale, providing jobs and boosting local economies in both developed and developing countries. This economic activity can lead to increased prosperity and reduced poverty levels in many regions.

On the other hand, the dominance of these companies raises significant concerns. One major issue is the exploitation of workers and resources in developing countries, where labor laws and environmental regulations may be weaker. For instance, some companies have been criticized for paying low wages and disregarding environmental sustainability in pursuit of higher profits. Moreover, the monopolistic tendencies of large corporations can stifle competition, leading to higher prices and fewer choices for consumers. This concentration of power also undermines small businesses, which struggle to compete with the vast resources of multinational giants.

In my view, while the economic contributions of large international companies are undeniable, their negative impacts cannot be overlooked. Governments and international organizations must implement stricter regulations to ensure that these corporations operate ethically and responsibly. For example, enforcing fair labor practices and environmental standards can mitigate some of the harmful effects of their operations. Additionally, promoting competition through antitrust laws can prevent the formation of monopolies and protect consumer interests.

In conclusion, the rise of very large international companies is a complex phenomenon with both positive and negative implications. While they contribute to economic growth and innovation, their unchecked power can lead to exploitation and inequality. By adopting a balanced approach that encourages responsible corporate behavior, we can maximize the benefits of these companies while minimizing their drawbacks.
