Sample Essay (Band 9)
To solve ever-increasing environmental hazards throughout the world, the best way is to increase the price of fuel.
what is your opinion on the above assumption?
The increasing environmental challenges that the world faces today demand urgent solutions. One suggestion often put forward is to raise the price of fuel as a means of tackling these issues. While some may argue that this approach could be effective, I believe that it is not the best solution on its own. In this essay, I will examine both sides of the argument before providing my own opinion.
On the one hand, raising fuel prices could encourage individuals and businesses to reduce their fuel consumption, leading to a decrease in harmful emissions. The theory behind this is that higher fuel costs would prompt people to seek alternative, more sustainable modes of transportation, such as public transit, cycling, or walking. Additionally, companies may become more inclined to adopt energy-efficient technologies or shift to greener fuels, thus contributing to a reduction in air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. In this way, higher fuel prices could be seen as an effective incentive to promote environmental sustainability.
However, there are several issues with this approach. Firstly, raising fuel prices disproportionately impacts low-income individuals, who rely on private transportation due to limited access to public transit. This could exacerbate social inequality, making it even more difficult for these people to meet their daily transportation needs. Moreover, such a policy would not address the root causes of environmental degradation, such as overproduction and waste. To effectively combat environmental problems, governments must focus on systemic changes, including the promotion of green technologies and stricter regulations on industrial emissions, rather than relying solely on price hikes. Furthermore, fuel price increases could have unintended economic consequences, such as higher costs of goods and services, which could hurt the economy as a whole.
In my opinion, while raising fuel prices might contribute to environmental goals, it is not the most effective or equitable solution. A more comprehensive strategy is needed—one that includes improving public transportation infrastructure, incentivizing the development and use of renewable energy, and fostering global cooperation on environmental standards. By addressing the underlying causes of pollution and promoting sustainable practices, we can create long-term solutions that benefit both the environment and society.
In conclusion, although raising fuel prices could play a role in reducing environmental hazards, it should not be relied upon as the sole measure. A combination of policies aimed at sustainable development and innovation would provide a more balanced and effective approach to tackling the world’s environmental challenges.
