Band 9 Sample Essay:
Some people would say that parents should pay their children for small home duties (cleaning, washing dishes). Other would disagree.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
The debate over whether children should be financially rewarded for completing household chores has been ongoing among parents and educators. While some argue that paying children instills a strong work ethic and financial awareness, others contend that domestic responsibilities should be carried out without monetary incentives. In this essay, both perspectives will be examined before presenting my own view.
On the one hand, proponents of rewarding children believe it teaches them the value of money and the principle of exchange — that effort leads to reward. By earning an allowance for completing tasks like doing the dishes or cleaning their room, children may develop financial literacy from a young age. This experience can foster budgeting skills, saving habits, and a sense of independence. Furthermore, some claim that a small financial incentive can motivate otherwise reluctant children to contribute to the household in a more consistent manner.
On the other hand, critics argue that children should learn to contribute to household tasks as part of their responsibility to the family, not as a way to earn money. Introducing financial compensation at an early age might create unrealistic expectations and undermine intrinsic motivation. Rather than seeing chores as an essential contribution to shared living, children may begin to negotiate or refuse tasks unless paid. This mindset could have long-term implications for how they approach unpaid responsibilities in adulthood, such as volunteering or caregiving.
In my opinion, while teaching children about money is undoubtedly important, linking basic family contributions to financial gain may send the wrong message. A more balanced approach would be to encourage participation in chores as a family obligation, while offering separate opportunities — such as helping with extra projects — where financial incentives are appropriate. This way, children can understand the value of both cooperation and compensation.
In conclusion, while paying children for doing household chores has educational benefits, it may also hinder their understanding of responsibility. A thoughtful balance between voluntary participation and occasional rewards seems the most effective method for teaching both values.
