Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some people think that professional workers should be paid more than sports and entertainment personalities.

To what extent do you agree?

The debate over whether professional workers should earn more than sports and entertainment personalities has been ongoing for years. Some argue that individuals in fields such as medicine, education, and engineering should be compensated at higher rates due to their contributions to society. On the other hand, many believe that sports and entertainment stars deserve their vast salaries because of their unique talents and the entertainment value they provide. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives before concluding with my opinion.

On the one hand, professional workers such as doctors, teachers, and engineers play a fundamental role in the development and well-being of society. These individuals contribute to the advancement of healthcare, education, and infrastructure, fields that are crucial for the stability and progress of any country. For example, doctors work tirelessly to save lives, and teachers shape the future by educating the next generation. Their work has a direct and lasting impact on society, which is why many believe they should be compensated more generously. Furthermore, the demanding nature of these professions, coupled with years of education and training, justifies the notion that these workers deserve higher pay.

However, sports and entertainment figures also merit high salaries for several reasons. Firstly, they provide significant entertainment to millions of people around the world. Professional athletes and entertainers often have a massive fan following, and their performances bring joy and excitement to diverse audiences. Secondly, these individuals operate in an industry that generates enormous revenue. Major sports events, such as the Super Bowl or the FIFA World Cup, generate billions of dollars in television rights, sponsorships, and ticket sales. As a result, the salaries of sports and entertainment personalities are often tied to the money they bring into the economy. In many cases, the market demand for these individuals’ talents drives their high earnings.

In conclusion, while professional workers undeniably contribute significantly to society and should be well-compensated, the high salaries of sports and entertainment personalities are not entirely unjustified. The revenue generated by these industries and the unique talents required to succeed in these fields explain why such individuals are paid exorbitantly. Ultimately, the issue comes down to the economic forces at play, and both groups deserve recognition for their respective contributions.
