Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some people think Law breakers should be sent to prison. Others think they should do some alternative work. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is an ongoing debate regarding the appropriate punishment for individuals who violate the law. While some argue that imprisonment is the most effective response to crime, others contend that alternative forms of rehabilitation may yield more constructive outcomes. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting a personal opinion.

On one hand, proponents of incarceration believe that prison serves as both a deterrent and a form of retribution. From their point of view, imprisonment not only protects society from dangerous individuals but also upholds justice by ensuring that lawbreakers face the consequences of their actions. Moreover, for severe crimes such as murder or armed robbery, prison may be the only viable option to prevent further harm to society. Without strict consequences, individuals may feel incentivized to commit crimes, knowing that lenient measures await them.

On the other hand, critics of the traditional prison system argue that it often fails to address the root causes of criminal behavior, such as poverty, addiction, or lack of education. Instead of isolating offenders, alternative forms of punishment such as community service, vocational training, or counseling programs can offer opportunities for reintegration into society. For minor offenses, these alternatives are often more cost-effective and reduce the burden on the prison system. Importantly, such methods aim to reform rather than punish, potentially reducing recidivism rates in the long term.

In my view, a balanced approach is necessary. While prison should undoubtedly be used for serious and violent crimes, non-violent offenders may benefit more from rehabilitative programs. Tailoring the punishment to the nature of the crime and the offender’s background can result in more effective outcomes for both the individual and society. Overreliance on incarceration can be counterproductive, leading to overcrowded prisons and hardened criminals rather than law-abiding citizens.

In conclusion, although imprisonment is a necessary component of the justice system, it should not be the sole form of punishment. By incorporating alternative approaches where appropriate, we can create a more humane and effective legal system.
