Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some people say it is responsibility of the government to transport children to school, while others believe parents should transport their children to school. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The question of whether the government or parents should be responsible for transporting children to school has been widely debated. While some argue that it is the government’s responsibility to provide transportation, others believe that it is the duty of parents to ensure their children’s commute to school. This essay will explore both perspectives before offering my own opinion.

On one hand, those who advocate for government-provided transportation argue that it is a matter of equity and public service. Governments have the resources and infrastructure to organize efficient school transport systems that can serve all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background. In many countries, particularly in urban areas, traffic congestion is a common problem, and having a centralized system for school transportation can reduce the number of vehicles on the road, thus alleviating traffic issues. Furthermore, it is argued that ensuring safe and reliable transportation for children should be a priority for the government, especially in cases where parents are unable to provide transportation due to work commitments or other responsibilities.

On the other hand, those who believe that parents should be responsible for transporting their children contend that it promotes personal responsibility and family involvement. They argue that parents are more attuned to the needs of their children and can ensure a more personalized and flexible commute. Additionally, parents may choose to carpool with other families, thereby reducing costs and encouraging a sense of community. In rural areas where school transportation options are limited, it may be more practical for parents to transport their children themselves, as it provides greater convenience and flexibility. Furthermore, involving parents in the daily school run can allow them to spend more quality time with their children.

In my view, both arguments have merit, but I believe that the responsibility for school transportation should be shared between the government and parents. While the government should provide an organized system for those who need it, parents should also have the option to be involved in their children’s transportation, particularly in cases where it is more convenient or practical. A balanced approach that offers flexibility would best serve the diverse needs of families and communities.

In conclusion, the question of who should be responsible for transporting children to school is complex, with valid points on both sides. While the government can provide essential services for those who need them, parents should still have the opportunity to be involved in their children’s commute when possible.
