Sample Essay (Band 9)
Some people believe that the death penalty should be reinstated for serious crimes. Do you agree or disagree?
The debate surrounding the reinstatement of the death penalty for serious crimes has been a persistent issue in modern legal systems. While some argue that capital punishment is a necessary deterrent to heinous offenses, I strongly disagree with this view. I believe that the death penalty is both morally questionable and practically ineffective, and that its use should be permanently abolished.
To begin with, the ethical implications of state-sanctioned execution are deeply troubling. Taking a human life, even in response to a grave offense, challenges the very foundations of human rights and dignity. The justice system, by its nature, is susceptible to errors. There have been numerous cases in which innocent individuals were wrongfully convicted, only for the truth to emerge too late. In such situations, the death penalty becomes an irreversible miscarriage of justice.
Moreover, there is little evidence to suggest that capital punishment serves as an effective deterrent against crime. In fact, countries that have abolished the death penalty, such as Norway and Canada, often report lower rates of violent crime compared to those where it is still practiced. This indicates that the certainty and fairness of punishment are more effective in preventing crime than the severity of punishment itself.
From a socioeconomic perspective, maintaining a death penalty system is often more costly than life imprisonment due to prolonged legal processes, appeals, and the need for maximum security facilities. These financial resources could be better allocated toward crime prevention strategies, rehabilitation programs, and support for victims’ families.
In conclusion, reinstating the death penalty would not address the root causes of serious crime, nor would it contribute meaningfully to societal safety or justice. Instead, it risks deepening social inequality and perpetuating a cycle of violence. A more humane and progressive approach involves focusing on reform, rehabilitation, and restorative justice systems.
