Sample Essay (Band 9)
Many think that all decisions within a company should be made by managers whereas others feel it is better to include employees in the process.
Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.
In the corporate world, decision-making is a critical element that directly affects a company’s success. Some argue that all strategic and operational decisions should be made solely by managers, while others advocate for involving employees in the process. This essay will explore both perspectives and explain why I believe that a collaborative approach is more beneficial in the long run.
On one hand, proponents of manager-led decision-making argue that leaders possess the experience, qualifications, and a broader understanding of the business environment. They are trained to make decisions that align with the company’s objectives and long-term vision. Furthermore, involving too many people in the decision-making process can slow down productivity and lead to inefficiencies, particularly in time-sensitive situations. In hierarchical organizations, clear leadership is often necessary to maintain order and accountability.
On the other hand, involving employees in decision-making can foster a more inclusive and motivated work culture. When employees feel that their opinions matter, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to the company’s goals. This can result in increased productivity, lower turnover rates, and a more positive workplace atmosphere. Moreover, employees often have first-hand knowledge of operational challenges and customer needs, which can lead to more practical and effective solutions when they are consulted.
Companies such as Google and Toyota are well-known for encouraging employee input, and this has often led to innovation and continuous improvement. Shared decision-making can also enhance trust between management and staff, making it easier to implement changes and adapt to market shifts.
In my opinion, while managers should retain the authority to make final decisions, actively seeking input from employees is a strategy that can lead to better outcomes. A hybrid model that combines leadership with consultation not only improves the quality of decisions but also strengthens internal cohesion.
