Sample Answer (Band 9)

Many species of animals all around the world are on the verge of extinction. Some say that countries and individuals should protect these animals from dying out, while others say that we should concentrate more on the problems of human beings.

Discuss both viewpoints and give your opinion.

The extinction of numerous animal species has become a pressing global issue, sparking debates about whether efforts should focus on saving these animals or addressing human problems. Both perspectives have valid arguments, and this essay will discuss them before presenting my opinion.

On the one hand, proponents of animal conservation argue that protecting endangered species is crucial for maintaining biodiversity. Every species plays a unique role in the ecosystem, and the loss of one can disrupt the entire balance, leading to unforeseen consequences. For example, the disappearance of bees, which are vital pollinators, could severely impact food production. Furthermore, many animals have intrinsic value and deserve to exist regardless of their utility to humans. Conservation efforts also promote environmental awareness, encouraging societies to adopt more sustainable practices.

On the other hand, some argue that human issues such as poverty, hunger, and disease should take precedence. They believe that allocating resources to animal conservation is a luxury when millions of people lack basic necessities. For instance, funds spent on preserving habitats could instead be used to build hospitals or improve education systems. Critics also point out that human activities, such as deforestation and industrialization, are often the root causes of animal extinction, suggesting that addressing these issues would indirectly benefit both humans and animals.

In my opinion, both perspectives are not mutually exclusive. Governments and individuals can strike a balance by integrating conservation efforts with human development. For example, eco-tourism can generate revenue while protecting wildlife, and sustainable farming practices can benefit both the environment and local communities. By adopting a holistic approach, we can address human needs while safeguarding the planet’s ecological balance.

In conclusion, while the protection of endangered species is essential for preserving biodiversity, human problems cannot be ignored. A balanced strategy that combines conservation with sustainable development is the most effective way to ensure a prosperous future for both humans and animals.
