While some argue that these events bring numerous advantages, others claim that the drawbacks may outweigh the perceived benefits. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, proponents of hosting global sports competitions highlight the potential for significant economic and social gains. These events attract millions of tourists, which can stimulate local economies, create jobs, and boost the hospitality and service sectors. Furthermore, such events can enhance a country’s international profile, portraying it as a capable and attractive destination for business and leisure. There is also a sense of national pride and unity that often emerges during these events, as citizens rally together in support of their athletes.

From an infrastructure standpoint, countries typically invest in long-term improvements such as transportation systems, stadiums, and public facilities, which can benefit the population long after the event concludes. For instance, cities like Barcelona and Tokyo underwent major urban transformations that continue to serve their residents.

On the other hand, critics argue that the financial burden of hosting large-scale sporting events is often underestimated. The enormous costs involved in construction, security, and event management can lead to budget deficits or divert funds from essential public services like healthcare and education. Moreover, there is no guarantee of economic return, especially if tourism revenue falls short or facilities become “white elephants” — underused and expensive to maintain.

Environmental and social concerns also play a role. Large crowds and rapid urban development can strain natural resources and displace local communities. In some cases, the promised legacy of these events has failed to materialize, leaving countries with debt and unused infrastructure.

In my opinion, while hosting an international sports event can offer notable opportunities, it is only truly beneficial when there is careful planning, financial transparency, and long-term vision. Without these, the risks may indeed outweigh the rewards.
