Sample  Essay (Band 9)

All nations on the planet have a responsibility to lessen the greenhouse gases that they emit. Although this can be very difficult for developing countries, they also need to make significant reductions.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

The issue of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a pressing global challenge that requires collective action from all nations. While developed countries have historically been the largest emitters, developing nations are also contributing significantly to the problem due to rapid industrialization and population growth. I strongly agree that all countries, including developing ones, have a responsibility to reduce their emissions, even though this may pose significant challenges for them.

One of the main reasons why developing countries must participate in emission reduction efforts is the universal impact of climate change. Greenhouse gases do not respect national borders; their effects, such as rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise, are felt globally. For example, a small island nation facing the threat of submersion due to rising sea levels is not responsible for the majority of emissions but suffers the consequences. Therefore, it is imperative that all nations, regardless of their economic status, contribute to mitigating this global crisis.

However, it is important to recognize the disparities between developed and developing countries. Many developing nations rely heavily on fossil fuels for economic growth and lack the financial resources to transition to cleaner energy sources. For instance, countries like India and Nigeria face the dual challenge of reducing emissions while addressing poverty and infrastructure deficits. In such cases, developed countries should provide financial and technological support to help developing nations adopt sustainable practices. This collaborative approach ensures that emission reduction efforts are equitable and effective.

Moreover, developing countries have the opportunity to leapfrog traditional, polluting technologies and adopt cleaner alternatives. For example, renewable energy sources like solar and wind power are becoming increasingly affordable and accessible. By investing in these technologies, developing nations can achieve sustainable development without repeating the mistakes of industrialized countries. This not only benefits the environment but also creates new economic opportunities in the green energy sector.

In conclusion, while the task of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is daunting for developing countries, it is a necessary step to combat climate change. Developed nations must support these efforts through funding and technology transfer, ensuring a fair and inclusive approach to global emission reduction. By working together, all nations can fulfill their responsibility to protect the planet for future generations.
