Sample Essay (Band 9)

Government in many countries have recently introduced the special taxes on food and beverages with the high level of sugar.

Some think that these attacks are a good idea while other disagree discuss both views and give your opinion

In recent years, a growing number of governments have implemented sugar taxes on food and beverages that contain high levels of added sugar. While some people support this initiative as a means to combat rising health problems, others argue that it infringes on individual freedom and may not be the most effective solution. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view.

Supporters of the sugar tax often point to the alarming increase in obesity, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases linked to excessive sugar consumption. By making sugary products more expensive, governments aim to discourage their purchase and thereby reduce overall sugar intake. This approach is backed by various studies that have shown a correlation between higher prices and decreased consumption of unhealthy items. For instance, in countries like Mexico and the UK, sugar taxes have led to noticeable declines in the sales of sugary soft drinks. In this sense, the tax serves not only as a financial deterrent but also as a public health measure.

On the other hand, critics of the sugar tax argue that it is a paternalistic policy that restricts personal choice. They believe individuals should have the right to decide what they consume without government interference. Moreover, there are concerns that such taxes disproportionately affect low-income groups, for whom even a small increase in food prices can be burdensome. Some also question the overall effectiveness of these taxes, suggesting that education and awareness campaigns might be more sustainable and ethical in promoting healthy lifestyles.

In my opinion, while the sugar tax may seem intrusive, it is a necessary intervention in light of the public health crisis many countries face. The costs associated with treating lifestyle-related diseases place a significant burden on healthcare systems. Therefore, policies that promote healthier eating habits, even through economic disincentives, are justified. Nevertheless, the tax should be part of a broader strategy that includes education, subsidies for healthy food, and transparent labeling.

In conclusion, although there are valid arguments on both sides, I believe that sugar taxes are an effective and justifiable tool to promote public health. However, they must be implemented carefully to ensure they are fair and supported by complementary health initiatives.
