Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some people find advertisements amusing or annoying and they are not influenced by this when they shop.

To what extend do you agree or disagree.

It is often argued that while advertisements may be entertaining or irritating, they have little to no impact on people’s purchasing decisions. I partly agree with this perspective, as I believe that although some individuals are genuinely unaffected by advertisements, others are subconsciously influenced in subtle yet powerful ways.

On the one hand, it is true that a segment of the population has developed a certain resilience to marketing strategies. With the proliferation of advertisements across various media platforms, many individuals have become desensitized and tend to dismiss them as background noise. They may find certain ads amusing or annoying, but they claim that such emotions do not alter their shopping habits. For instance, people who are highly conscious of their budgets or who follow specific brands based on quality and trust are less likely to be swayed by promotional content. In these cases, consumer behavior is largely driven by rational decision-making rather than emotional appeal.

However, advertising is a multi-billion-dollar industry precisely because it works—often in subtle ways. Even when people believe they are immune to its influence, advertisements can shape brand recognition, preferences, and consumer perception over time. Through techniques such as repetition, celebrity endorsement, and emotional storytelling, advertisements create associations that linger in the subconscious. A catchy jingle or a memorable slogan might not lead to an immediate purchase, but it increases the likelihood that a consumer will choose that brand when faced with options. Therefore, the impact of advertising can be both direct and indirect.

In conclusion, while some individuals may not be consciously influenced by advertising due to experience or skepticism, many others are affected at a subconscious level. Thus, I partially agree with the statement, acknowledging both the limitations and the power of modern advertising.
