Sample Essay (Band 9)

Research shows that the transportation of products and people is now one of the biggest sources of pollution worldwide. Some people think it is the responsibility of governments to solve this problem while others think it is the responsibility of individuals.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The escalation of pollution caused by transportation has become a pressing global issue. While some argue that governments should take primary responsibility for mitigating this problem, others contend that individuals must also play an active role. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting a personal viewpoint.

On one hand, proponents of governmental intervention argue that large-scale problems require systematic and policy-driven solutions. Governments have the jurisdiction and resources to implement strict environmental regulations, promote green infrastructure, and invest in sustainable public transport systems. For example, some countries have successfully subsidized electric vehicles and developed extensive cycling lanes, reducing urban emissions significantly. Without legislative enforcement, it would be difficult to hold industries and citizens accountable for their environmental impact.

On the other hand, individual behavior also plays a crucial role in reducing pollution. Everyday choices such as using public transport, carpooling, or adopting fuel-efficient vehicles can collectively lead to substantial environmental benefits. Moreover, a shift in consumer habits can drive demand for sustainable products and services, which in turn compels industries to adapt. Relying solely on the government can lead to complacency, whereas individual responsibility fosters a culture of environmental consciousness.

In my opinion, both parties share equal responsibility. While governments must facilitate environmentally friendly systems and enforce regulations, individuals must adopt sustainable lifestyles. Only through collaborative efforts can we hope to tackle the environmental crisis posed by transportation. The synergy between policy-making and personal accountability is imperative for long-term success.

To conclude, pollution from transportation is a multifaceted issue that necessitates action from both the government and the public. A balanced approach, combining top-down regulations with bottom-up behavioral change, will be the most effective strategy to address this urgent concern.
