Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some people believe that governments for a better future should support older people but some others say they should support young people.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The debate over whether governments should prioritize supporting the elderly or the younger generation is both complex and significant. While both age groups require assistance, I firmly believe that greater emphasis should be placed on supporting young people, as they are the driving force behind long-term national development. However, this does not mean that older individuals should be neglected.

On one hand, the elderly population has contributed to society throughout their working lives and deserves dignity and care in retirement. Many older individuals face financial hardship, health issues, and social isolation, especially in countries with aging populations. Therefore, providing them with adequate pensions, accessible healthcare, and social programs is a matter of fairness and moral obligation. Neglecting this demographic could lead to societal imbalance and increased pressure on healthcare systems.

On the other hand, investing in the youth is an investment in the future prosperity of a nation. Young people represent the upcoming workforce, innovators, and leaders. By allocating more resources to education, vocational training, and employment opportunities, governments can ensure a skilled and competitive population that will drive economic growth and societal progress. Furthermore, young individuals today are facing numerous challenges, including high unemployment rates, housing insecurity, and mental health concerns. Supporting them effectively would not only empower them individually but would also yield broader social and economic benefits.

In my opinion, although governments must continue to protect the welfare of older citizens, a future-oriented approach should prioritize the development of the younger generation. A balanced strategy is ideal, but the allocation of resources must be made with a long-term vision in mind. By nurturing the youth, societies can become more innovative, resilient, and economically sustainable, ultimately benefiting all age groups.
