Sample Essay (Band 9)

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

The issue of whether children should be allowed to make their own choices on matters such as food, clothing, and entertainment has sparked considerable debate. While some people argue that giving children the freedom to make decisions will lead to selfish individuals, others believe that it is crucial for children to make decisions about matters that directly affect them. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

On one hand, opponents of children making their own choices argue that such freedom may result in a self-centered society. If children are permitted to prioritize their own desires in everyday matters, they may develop a sense of entitlement and narcissism, where their needs take precedence over others. For instance, if children are allowed to choose what they eat, they may opt for junk food, leading to unhealthy eating habits. Over time, these habits can become ingrained and difficult to change, potentially contributing to a broader societal issue of unhealthy lifestyles. Moreover, such unregulated choices may undermine the development of empathy and social responsibility, as children may focus solely on their individual needs, disregarding the needs of others.

On the other hand, proponents of allowing children to make their own decisions argue that it is essential for their personal development. By making choices, children learn the consequences of their actions and become more independent. This process helps them develop critical thinking skills, self-confidence, and a sense of accountability. For example, when a child selects their own clothes or decides on entertainment activities, they gain a sense of control and autonomy, which is crucial for their emotional and intellectual growth. Furthermore, making decisions about personal matters allows children to feel more respected and valued, fostering a healthy relationship with their caregivers.

In my opinion, while it is important for children to learn the consequences of their decisions, they should still be guided by adults. Parents and educators can offer support and structure to help children make informed choices without indulging in excessive freedom. Therefore, a balanced approach is ideal—allowing children to make some decisions while maintaining appropriate boundaries and guidance.
