Sample Essay (Band 9)

In many countries, people like to eat a wider range of food than can be grown in their local place. Therefore, much of the food people eat today has to come from other regions.

Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh disadvantages.

In today’s globalized world, people have access to a wide variety of foods that are not native to their region. As a result, many countries import food from other regions to meet the growing demand for diverse cuisines. While some may argue that this development brings numerous benefits, I believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, particularly when considering environmental, economic, and health-related consequences.

On the one hand, the availability of a broader range of food products has made it easier for people to enjoy different cuisines from around the world. This cultural exchange fosters greater diversity in food options, allowing individuals to explore a variety of tastes and culinary traditions. For instance, people living in colder climates can enjoy tropical fruits like bananas and pineapples, which would otherwise be unavailable. Furthermore, the international trade of food promotes global cooperation, which can help strengthen economic ties between countries. This global food network also ensures that consumers have access to foods that are not seasonally available in their own regions, thus providing a more balanced and varied diet year-round.

However, despite these advantages, there are significant drawbacks to the increasing reliance on imported food. One of the most concerning issues is the environmental impact of food transportation. The carbon footprint associated with shipping food over long distances is substantial, contributing to climate change and environmental degradation. Additionally, the overreliance on imported goods can undermine local economies by discouraging the growth of indigenous agricultural industries. When countries import large quantities of food, local farmers may struggle to compete, leading to job losses and a decrease in domestic food production. This can result in food insecurity in some regions, as they become more dependent on foreign suppliers. Lastly, the transportation of food over long distances can lead to a loss of freshness, as food may be harvested before it is fully ripe to withstand the journey, reducing its nutritional value.

In conclusion, while the global trade of food has undoubtedly brought some benefits, such as increased variety and cultural exchange, I believe that the disadvantages, particularly the environmental impact and potential harm to local economies, outweigh these advantages. Therefore, it is crucial for countries to strike a balance between enjoying international cuisine and supporting local food production to ensure long-term sustainability.
