Band 9 Sample Answer (IELTS Writing Task 2)

The only reason that people work hard is to earn money.

Do you Agree or disagree?

It is often suggested that the sole reason people work hard is to earn money. While financial stability is undoubtedly a significant motivator, I firmly disagree with this notion. In my opinion, individuals are driven by a variety of factors, including personal fulfillment, career development, and the desire to contribute to society.

First and foremost, financial rewards are an essential aspect of any job. People do need money to meet their basic needs, such as food, housing, and healthcare. However, research has shown that once individuals have earned enough to satisfy their essential needs, they often seek other forms of motivation, such as job satisfaction or advancement opportunities. This suggests that money is not the only driving force behind a person’s work ethic. For example, many employees work tirelessly because they are passionate about their careers or feel a strong sense of purpose in the work they do.

Furthermore, career development plays a crucial role in motivating individuals. Many workers are highly committed to enhancing their skills, gaining experience, and progressing within their chosen fields. Such professional growth allows them to achieve personal goals and feel more accomplished. This sense of achievement is often more rewarding than the monetary benefits that come with promotions. For instance, individuals working in fields such as education or healthcare often feel an immense sense of pride and satisfaction from making a difference in people’s lives, rather than focusing solely on their salary.

Another significant factor is the desire to contribute to society. Many people work hard because they want to make a positive impact on their communities or the world at large. This intrinsic motivation often leads to greater job satisfaction and a stronger work ethic than the mere pursuit of money. People who work in social services, for example, are often driven by the fulfillment of helping others rather than by the financial compensation.

In conclusion, although money remains an important motivator for many individuals, it is far from the only reason people work hard. Personal fulfillment, career development, and the desire to contribute to society are all powerful factors that contribute to one’s work ethic. Therefore, it is essential to recognize that human motivation is multifaceted and cannot be reduced to the pursuit of financial gain alone.
